With a quality mark, a brand can show that it is making efforts to make more sustainable products. Questionmark uses the definitions of top quality mark as established by Milieu Centraal.
MSC | |||
MSC is an international certificate for sustainably caught wild fish from the Marine Stewardship Council, an international independent organization to protect marine life. Products with the MSC quality mark are guaranteed traceable to sustainable fisheries that meet the MSC fishing standard. This means that 1. there is no overfishing on fish stocks (fishing pressure and biomass are healthy) 2. there is respect for other marine life (such as birds, mammals, sensitive areas) and 3. good management takes place (catch agreements, compliance, check).
Organic farming | |||
An important principle in organic agriculture is the fertility of the soil. For this reason, the label prohibits fertilizer and herbicides during the growth of crops and limits the use of other pesticides and cleaning agents. In addition, it requires crop rotation and sets requirements for the origin and properties of the seed. Conventional and organic products must also be separated during cultivation, harvesting, storage and transport. Organic fish is always farmed fish; wild fish cannot be certified organic. The organic certificate sets requirements for the origin of juvenile fish (juveniles), fish feed, slaughtering techniques, and farming systems (which also take into account the risk of farmed fish escaping). Part of the requirements is about animal welfare; fish are kept in an environment with a soil that is as natural as possible and in water with sufficient oxygen.
